Description
Hartside is a magical place, a pass in the northern fells where the A686 reaches the summit at 1903ft, connecting Melmerby and Alston. The easy gradients and swooping curves of the McAdam road cuts through Hartside. Without the road not many people would visit Hartside and it would be left as a wilderness area, like some of its near neighbours. It doesn’t take long walking away from the road towards Fiend’s Fell and Cross Fell to feel an added sense of wilderness and desolation. Hartside is visited by many folk using various means of transport.
